Silica primarily acts as a reinforcing agent in rubber, significantly improving its physical and mechanical properties and finding widespread use in various rubber products. Below are the specific roles and applications of silica in rubber:

1. Reinforcing Role
Improving Mechanical Properties: Silica (especially fumed silica) can form a three-dimensional network structure with rubber molecular chains, significantly improving the mechanical properties of rubber such as tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness.
Enhanced Abrasion Resistance: In products such as tires and rubber shoes, silica, as a reinforcing filler, enhances the abrasion resistance of rubber, extending its service life.

2. Application Areas
Silicone Rubber: Silica is widely used in silicone rubber, primarily acting as a reinforcing agent, providing silicone rubber with good mechanical and dielectric properties.
Medical Rubber: Medical rubber products reinforced with fumed silica are non-toxic, chemically inert, and resistant to aging, making them widely used in the medical field, such as in medical gloves, catheters, and artificial organs.
Tire Rubber: Nano-silica filled green tires have the characteristics of low rolling resistance and low fuel consumption, and can replace traditional carbon black, improving tire safety and environmental friendliness.
Rubber Tubes, Belts, and Shoes: In rubber tubes and belts, silica improves abrasion resistance and fatigue resistance; in rubber shoes, silica can replace carbon black 100%, enhancing the abrasion resistance and hardness of the soles.

3. Other Characteristics
Improved Processing Properties: The addition of silica can improve the processing properties of rubber, making it easier to mold and process.
Enhanced Weather Resistance: Silica can also improve the weather resistance and thermal stability of rubber, allowing it to maintain good performance even in harsh environments.
Summary: The role of silica in rubber mainly lies in reinforcement, abrasion resistance, and weather resistance. It is widely used in silicone rubber, medical rubber, tire rubber, and rubber tubes and belts, significantly improving the performance and service life of rubber products.

How does the addition of nano-silica affect the performance of rubber?

When the amount of nano-silica added is low, the tensile strength of the rubber usually increases with the increase of the amount added. This is because nano-silica can act as a reinforcing agent, forming physical or chemical adsorption with rubber molecular chains. For example, in natural rubber, when the amount of nano-silica added increases from 0 to 5 phr (parts per hundred rubber), the tensile strength may gradually increase. The reason is that nano-silica particles interact with rubber molecular chains, and can effectively transfer and disperse stress during stretching, preventing the slippage of rubber molecular chains, thus improving tensile strength.
